First Big Snow Show of the Season…

Can it all go back where it came from?

Seriously…

It’s pretty and all but this is ridiculous!! Not only is there snow (and lots of it) but there’s sleet and soon there will be rain too…

On another note, I started my reading for Bible study this weekend. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, we are going over the 7 churches in the book of Revelation. This week we are studying the church at Thyatira (Revelation 2:18-29).

The city of Thyatira was first mentioned in the New Testament in Acts 16:14. It was the home of Lydia who heard Paul speak about Christ and she and her household were baptized. Lydia began the church at Thyatira but somewhere along the way they began to follow the teachings of Jezebel and follow some of her practices.

What is interesting about the word Thyatira is that it means “a perfume; sacrifice of labor” (Hitchcock’s Bible Dictionary of Names).

A sacrifice of labor. Now, I could talk about the fact that Thyatira was a manufacturing city. They made clothing, dyed cloth and made pottery as a few examples. But I’m really struck by the meaning “a sacrifice of labor.”

A sacrifice in the Random House Dictionary is a noun and a verb. The noun definition that stood out to me is, “the surrender or destruction of something prized or desirable for the sake of something considered as having a higher or more pressing claim.” One of the verb definitions is, “to surrender or give up, or permit injury or disadvantage to, for the sake of something else.”

Labor is also a noun and a verb but it is also an adjective. Here are a few of the definitions that stood out to me:

  • productive activity, esp. for the sake of economic gain.
  • to strive, as toward a goal; work hard (often fol. by for): to labor for peace.
  • to act, behave, or function at a disadvantage (usually fol. by under): to labor under a misapprehension.
  • and, of course, labor also speaks of the act of childbirth…

Like other churches, Thyatira was praised for their works, love, etc. But they were warned of the “prophetess” Jezebel (which speaks of disobedience) and her teachings (i.e. eating food sacrificed to idols). Now, Ms. Jezebel was given the oppotunity (like many of us, she was possibly given multiple chances) to repent of her sins and yet she didn’t. There were those at Thyatira who chose to follow her teachings and they would receive the same fate that came to Ms. J.

However, there was a remnant (there’s always a remnant I find) who held fast to what Paul taught about Christ Jesus. Here is what was said to the remnant:

“Now to you I say, and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine, who have not known the depths of Satan, as they say, I will put on you no other burden.
But hold fast what you have till I come.
And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations—
‘HE SHALL RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON; THEY SHALL BE DASHED TO PIECES LIKE THE POTTER’S VESSELS’— as I also have received from My Father;
and I will give him the morning star.
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ‘

“HE SHALL RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON; THEY SHALL BE DASHED TO PIECES LIKE THE POTTER’S VESSELS”.

There is so much more here and it’s pretty late so I will save it for another time…

Bless you in Christ Jesus,

Jen
